Kinja'd!!!

Had to vent to someone who knew what I was talking about.

I went to Miracle Toyota in Florida today to get my 30K mile service for my Tundra. Not only did they “absolutely recommend” $400 worth of shit I didn’t need. They essentially handed me back a car with no air filter.

On check in I told the service writer that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and required a cleaning+oil kit, and that if they didn’t have one, I had an extra pre-oiled filter (the parts company goofed and sent two with the CIA kit for some reason).

So what does the dumbfuck tech go and do, thinking he was being helpful? Just cleaned the filter while he was cleaning my induction, and wasn’t even aware that reusable filters sometimes need oil to work. I only noticed this because of an incredibly subtle change in the engine noise. It didn’t make the slight whistle noise this CIA makes. It was only out of what I thought was an over-abundance of caution that I went back in, waited 15 minutes to talk to someone, and asked about what they had done.

The “cleaned” filter was also still filthy.

To their credit, they were apologetic and grateful that I didn’t grenade my engine. However, the fact that the service manager’s excuse was “we’ve just never seen one of those” is troubling to me. I like TRD parts because they’re normally pretty decent and because they are Toyota parts that work with Toyota warranties.

I also assumed Toyota techs would be able to service them. I now know this to be hilariously wrong, at least at Miracle Toyota.

What kind of tech hasn’t seen an oiled filter before?! I mean, K&N has been around for years and a major proponent of that style.

It’s a miracle they didn’t fuck up you your truck. I mean, how hard is it? You didn’t exactly ask them to rebuild your transmission or something.

Is your intake whistling again? Kinda weird you noticed a change since they didn’t actually do anything. Wonder if your airbox was loose.

You might think about writing to corporate. Most service departments are manic about their customer service survey ratings because the corporation tracks these things. You might make a difference.

Yeah I stayed calm the whole time, cause I wanted them to know what they did. But now I feel like I should have also fucked their shit up cause they were just dense car dealer types about the whole thing.

That might be a good avenue to vent on.

He actually specifically used the excuse of “K&N doesn’t need it, so I figured it was the same.” Everyone just sort of talked over him, but walking away from the convo it made me wonder how many cars this guy has bricked in his day.

They had done something, they had removed the filter and pressure washed it. It was letting way more air through, felt ever so slightly off, but I’m glad I turned around.

Yelling at people in the moment rarely accomplishes anything good for you. That was the right course. Dealing with it through channels is usually the best way to try anyway.

It’s just a faint whistle at certain engine loads. It’s objectively annoying, but I like it for some reason.

And in this case saved me some anguish, I guess.

Heck, I’ve heard of dealerships and fast lube shops forgetting to put back the air filter!

That’s why I always check their work. I stop using shops and DIY my own vehicles after warranty. I hate paying other people to get it wrong.

I remember bringing my E46 to a shop for a diff fluid change, I supplied them with not only the differential fluid but the crush washers and the torque specs on a note attached to the fluid bottles.

When I got my car home, the “tech” forgot to put a crush washer on the lower bolt (the most important one), it leaked of course and had to have them redo it. They didn’t have my fluid and would only use their cheap stuff. I was not a happy camper. I supplied the fluid, crush washers and even torque settings and they still found a way to screw it up!

I’ve never had anything done correctly at a dealership. I learned that lesson like 20 years ago. Anytime I’ve taken something in for warranty work they fuck it up. DIY.
